Well, as some readers know World Fantasy Con isn't like most other cons. In fact it's not like any other convention I've ever been too. It's probably the only gathering in the industry where the professionals out number the fans. It's also one of the largest gatherings of pros, with the least programming to get in the way of schmoozing, and catching up with friends. So the short list is real simple. I wish i were there to make contact with some of the editors i know, and the would be pros looking for an agent. I wish i was there to congratulate Mary on her Campbell win in person since I don't think i saw her in Denver after the award ceremony. I wish I were there to see my friend and client Glynn for the first time in more than half a decade. I wish to meet Calie, another client who got me to say yes to the first Urban Fantasy since i opened the agency.
I also wish I were in Calgary, because if i had known i was going I'd have planned to sneak out to the Flames vs Bruins game tonight.

I'm a little sad, though, because laughing with you was part of my WFC the last couple of years, and so even though I can't go myself, I was picturing you having a blast. Sigh.

Well, my next two cons are (barring disaster) Arisia and Lunacon... either of those on the menu for you?
I'd rather be there with you, but we never seem to land in the same conversation for more than a few minutes.
And poor Glynn and Calie, I sent them off with a two page list of people to say hi to. If they don't sleep they might meet half of them.

And that's the way of cons: sleep is not optional, and yet it cuts into your meeting-people time so much!

I think the reason I love it is that it is almost entirely about the writing. The people there are serious about the work. The food is good, and there are opportunities to talk seriously with other professionals, something some cons lack, as you can't find each other between panels.
I guess we shall have to attend in spirit. Our spirits can go to WFC, hang out, have a coffee together, and watch everything we're missing. ;-)

Trust me, the second time is easier than the first...
Unless I'm lying.
