I come back to LJ after days away due to Real Life and other foul substances, and the first thing I run across is yet another post on Racefail '09. I don't know where to begin on that rolling, rotting, insipid heap in vitriol, ignorance and self congratulation, so I will for the sake of not making dozens of people cry or jump off bridges stay out of it. Somebody please post something interesting that has nothing to do with this in comments.
(yes that really was the song playing at random when I wrote this.)

I bought myself a nice little dirk at Radcon, and now I feel the urge to study martial arts which involve knives. Probably easier than studying anything involving shooting at the moment--though there's a public shooting range nearby, timing is not the best for me to pick up another skill I want, which is to spend more time mastering a large frame handgun like a Sig Sauer.
(Okay, is that different enough? I remember our weapons discussion from Denvention)

If you're looking for something that simply goes BOOM a Sig is great, but mine has too many parts to clean. I much prefer my Para Ord.

(Don't know if it's interesting, but at least it's optimistic.)

Kiernan seems to be horror; the prose is very, very different - I'm not even sure how to describe it. I think most her books have the "take a peek" option on Amazon.

http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/03/sci_fi_channel_aims_to_shed_ge.php
From the article:
"The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular," said TV historian Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel when he worked at USA Network.
In what universe is alienating your core audience a GOOD thing?

But the question lingers: if this racefail 09 is so bloody offensive, why waste precious heartbeats of your life reading it? If Thurman is your carrot and stick, read him instead.

Re: Live journal
And I was asked for my evaluation of a particular piece of drivel by a good friend because of the um, conspicuous place it is placed on the web. It's one of those places one can't avoid 100% without missing too much. In this case I don't _want_ to avoid the place. The commentary in questions is full of the egregious nonsense that is fit to send me from zero to Statesman in 0.3 seconds.
